The world is awash in online trip planning and ticket buying services for the air traveler.
riders in the UK, across Europe and in India are able to check schedules, make connections, buy tickets and reserve seats.
On the other hand, harried city commuters seemed consigned to forever exist in the static display age. True, numerous public transit systems had put up Intelligent Information Systems signs at transit centers and bus stops that provide route and schedules along with updated system and weather information.
Online, however, the available services still resembled their printed equivalents: lists of routes, schedules and custom-drawn street maps.
Because advances in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) tools already provided access to
expected travel times
and weather-induced changes in vehicle arrival times,
“World Cities Planner" (WCP) (Name changed, and some details withheld with respect to NDA)
discerned an opportunity in early 2007 to build an online but more visual depiction of vehicle routes and real-time schedules.
WCP directed HyTech Professionals to develop a template
to which vehicle operators could subscribe. The WCP business model also created a revenue stream through the display of advertising.
WBP also wanted to:
- Be ready to go global immediately. Hence, the website had to accommodate multiple languages.
- Drastically cut both time-to-market and startup cost by making use of pluggable map controls from different providers.
